UPMC received a $2.7 million High End Instrumentation grant from the National Institutes of Health, to purchase a new cyclotron for UPMC Presbyterian. Landau Building Company was contracted to perform the replacement.
The removal of existing equipment and bringing in the new 21 ton cyclotron onto the 9th floor of Presbyterian University Hospital was a logistical puzzle. As can be seen in the photos below, Landau opened a hole into the side of the building then used a crane to move the equipment in and out. This method facilitated infectious control, shortened the schedule and the hospital remained in full operation during the construction.
“This project involved a variety of subcontractor groups and was extremely complicated with an ambitious timeline for completion. Jeff (Landau's superintendent) was involved in every detail of the construction, was extremely knowledgeable, listened to our suggestions and concerns, and was always cheerful and helpful. Without his dedication and full involvement in this project, I am sure that our targeted deadline for completion would not have been met.”
