The West Virginia University Book Depository addition provides storage for 750,000 books. The 12,000 square foot addition also has space for bound journals, microfilm, and audio visual materials.
Proper climate control systems were paramount to the success of this project. The depository was designed and built to be a very finely controlled interior space which houses books and materials highly sensitive to humidity and temperature variations. A battery-powered lift used to retrieve books from the 30-foot high shelves required that an extremely level floor be built to far tighter tolerances than conventional floor slabs.
“I have never been involved in a construction project with so few problems… and I’ve been involved in many.”
- Randy Jenkins
