UPMC Shadyside – OR/CE/PACU

  • Project: New Operating Room and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit
  • Owner: UPMC – Shadyside
  • Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Architect: Radelet McCarthy Polletta

Landau Building Company completed this complex, thirteen-phase project in fourteen months. During the construction process, Landau created a new high-tech operating room for robotic surgery (De Vinci Surgical Robot) and added three additional patient beds to an existing post-acute care unit (PACU). Skilled coordination was required to balance the fast-paced nature of the project. Newly renovated areas were immediately occupied to permit the subsequent phase of renovations to begin. After numerous relocations, space was available to expand the post-acute care unit and build the new operating room. Construction of an operating room brings additional challenges including time and sterility. All of the work was completed during late night and early morning hours and followed strict ICRA 4 standards. Construction areas remained fully functional throughout the process. Landau was prepared to suspend construction at a moment’s notice in case of emergency surgery or increase in hospital census. Landau’s superintendent and project manager remained in constant communication with the hospital’s four department heads (Clinical Engineering, Anesthesia, Surgery, and Post-Acute Care Unit) and the entire patient care staff. Landau finished the project with complete satisfaction of all Shadyside personnel. Shortly after the completion of this project, Landau was awarded the Hybrid OR project, a project located on the same floor of Shadyside Hospital.
