We have exciting news! Landau Building Company is shortlisted for two MBA Building Excellence Awards! Our Jefferson Regional Medical Center project is the finalist for Renovations Over $10 Million, and the Mario Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers is a finalist for Renovations Under $10 Million.  Jefferson’s $15 million project transformed existing office spaces into a beautiful new cancer treatment center and women health centers.  Our project team worked tirelessly to complete this project as scheduled, putting great detail into the finishing touches.  While working on the Lemieux Center, we collaborated with the Mario Lemieux Foundation to produce a stunning area where patients can feel relaxed and at home during a time of uncertainty. And thanks to additional donations from the Lemieux Foundation, a striking rooftop terrace, complete with putting green, was added as a focal point for the treatment center.

So come join us on Thursday, February 26th at the MBA’s Evening of Excellence to find out what happens! This annual event celebrates our hardworking industry members and showcases some of the best work in the region. We are honored to have been selected, and we are so proud of our Landau team. It’s sure to be a great night!

New Project: Bayer 1000

Landau Building Company finished the new Bayer 1000 project, located in Indianola, PA.  This 15,000 SF interior renovation installed new acoustical sound paneling in the overhead ceiling and created new conference centers and new restrooms. The existing 2×2 and 2×4 light fixtures were upgraded to new LED lighting.

Construction began after the holiday season and finished last month.  Bayer asked for the project to be completed within two months, and Landau agreed to fast-track the project in order to meet the owner’s needs accordingly.

Bayer Medical Care Area 200 & 400 Renovation

Bayer Door

Landau Building Company finished renovations to Bayer Medical Care areas 200 & 400, located in Indianola, PA. The 14,000 SF interior fit-out transformed the existing research labs into executive offices. The project began May 2014 and finished October 2014. Labs were demolished to create space for offices as well as cubicles and new bathrooms. High-end finishes, like quartz countertops, were used in the bathrooms and showers, and a new canopy entrance was constructed to service the new office areas.

Landau expedited construction in just five months by maintaining a full-time superintendent on site. Particular attention was given to not disrupting ongoing operations at Bayer. Normal construction concerns, like noise, debris, material deliveries, and subcontractor management, never became an issue. The project incorporated Bayer material science products and had mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design-build features to streamline construction and adaptability to the existing systems.

Throughout the past two-and-a-half years, Landau has completed five projects with Bayer. Bayer’s project manager awarded Landau with an excellent rating for professionalism, quality, and value. Safety considerations continue to be a fundamental concern for everyone involved. Landau partners with trusted and qualified subcontractors to deliver quality and safe work repeatedly for Bayer.

WVU Law School Expansion & Redesign

Front StaircaseFull Exterior

Landau Building Company recently finished additions and renovations to West Virginia University College of Law.  This completed a portion of WVU’s $26 million expansion and redesign of the law school. Landau completed 30,000 SF of additional space, which included classrooms, the John W. Fisher II Courtroom, conference rooms, the Hazel Ruby McQuain Dean’s Suite, a faculty office wing, a multi-purpose event hall, and offices for the Center of Energy and Sustainable Development. Also included was a new entrance  and rooftop garden, complete with sitting areas for the students and staff. Other renovations to the school will continue throughout the next two years during summer and winter breaks, which will provide additional meeting/interview rooms and centralized student services.

Since the law school remained open and fully operational during construction, the safety of all students and faculty was a major concern. Tight coordination between WVU and Landau Building Company allowed for events to continue as planned and walk-throughs of donors, faculty, and facility personnel to occur as scheduled. Shut-downs of utilities were timed to keep the school functioning accordingly.

On Tuesday, October 28, 2014, the Master Builders’ Association Young Contractors (MBA YC) held their second annual hands-on education program, the Healthcare Construction Best Practices Competition, at the Carpenter’s Training Center. Our very own Jennifer Landau is chairperson of the YC and the first female to hold an elected MBA committee position. The hands-on educational program is one of five yearly programs hosted by the MBA YC.  The event was such a great success last year and healthcare construction is such a huge part of our local industry,it was decided to make this an annual program.

Healthcare Construction Best Practices focuses on Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA), which is a system of practiced controls to minimize risk for patients and employees to be exposed to potentially dangerous infections. Due to the fact that hospital patients are especially susceptible because of compromised immune systems, our industry has a responsibility to minimize the migration of any construction dust and debris that could harm anyone in the hospital.

The program included a brief presentation followed by a hands-on activity, where participants had to actually install ICRA measures. Participants were divided into teams of five by company. Landau’s team consisted of Andrew Marsic, Chet Beres, Chris Priest, Doug Brenneman, and Jamie Maloney. For the competition, each group set up a plastic barricade with a zippered entrance, topped off a wall and sealed all penetrations within that wall, and hooked up a negative air machine. Performances were scored by quality of work, proper installation, and how well the negative air held in the space. Though Landau did not win the challenge, we developed a greater appreciation for the time and effort our field personnel exert every day when installing ICRA in hospital environments.
